From The Ultimate A-to-Z Bar Guide BEFORE THE PARTY
- Drink milk- it'll help slow alcohol absorption.
- Take vitamins B and C to get a jump start on replenishing some of the nutrients the alcohol will deplete.
- Eat something- food helps absorb alcohol. The fructose in foods like fruit, honey, and bread aids in slowing down alcohol absorption. Some theorize that fructose also helps replenish dipping blood sugar levels caused by alcohol consumption.
- Don't take aspirin beforehand. Recent studies show that aspirin retards the action of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol, and those who take it can absorb from 40 to 100 percent more alcohol into their blood.
DURING
- Drink plenty of water-it'll help rehydrate your system.
- If the evening's going to be along one, alternate between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks.
- Although it probably won't be available at most parties, drinking Gatorade replenishes some of the water and the electrolytes being expelled from your system.
AFTER
- First of all, know that the 'hair of the dog' will not cure a hangover. What it might do is numb you temporarily, but then your body will simply have to recover form that assault on it, so why bother?
- Before you go to bed, drink more water and take more vitamins B and C.
- Don't drink coffee- it's also a diuretic and will exacerbate dehydration.
- Eat something to help you absorb the alcohol and replenish the nutrients you've lost. And we don't mean potato chips. Eat fruit (like bananas) or vegetables (potatoes are good). Some people swear by tomatoes- a Virgin Mary, or pasta with tomato sauce might fill the bill.
- Sleep- something that might be difficult because as the alcohol in your system decreases, your body begins releasing adrenaline, which makes you fidgety and often increases body temperature slightly, making you restless and hot.
- when you wake up, drink more water.
- Go back to sleep and promise that hangover gods you'll never get drunk again!

It occurs to me that it would be nice to be able to check your happy cafe976.org email from the sketchy Internet kiosk thingies at 976, so I'm screwing around with a crappy Perl webmail system. It should be up and running in the next day or so. Or something like that anyway.

Lots of free coffee today. Where, by "free," I really mean that the 50 cents went in the tip jar instead of in the register.
